- Do I Qualify to use KidApprentice?
- You would benefit from using KidApprentice if you meet the following criteria:
- Have a LLC, S Corp, C Corp or sole proprietorship.
- The parents of the kids' you want to hire are full or part owners in the business.
- The business is not any occupation the Secretary of Labor has declared to be hazardous.
- Kid employees are between 7 and 17 years old (inclusive) and US Citizens or Green Card holders
- Your total income is above $50,000 per year
- At what age can I employ my kid?
- The court-tested minimum age you can hire your child is 7 years old (Eller v. Comm’r of Internal Revenue, 77 TC 934). You can employ your child earlier too, but if they cannot read and write yet, it may be difficult to justify their work. KidApprentice will help you pick age-appropriate tasks for your kids.
- What kinds of tasks can my kids do for my business?
- KidApprentice includes a task suggestion engine that, given a summary of what your business does and the hobbies and skills of your kids, will help you determine variety of age-appropriate tasks your kids can do for your business, from digital marketing to administrative assistance. KidApprentice will also help you determine a fair wage for the tasks.
- What is the risk of audit with this strategy?
- Employing your children itself does not increase your chances of being audited. In fact, the IRS provides official guidance on it, see IRS Pub 15, Employer's Tax Guide and IRS.gov - Small Business - Family Help. If you happen to be audited, having good records and timely payments will be essential to demonstrate to the IRS that you were hiring your kids correctly and legitimately. KidApprentice will help you keep good records and ensure the work is age-appropriate and fairly compensated.
- Will KidApprentice work with my existing tax filing CPA?
- Yes, we will provide you with detailed year-end reports that you can hand directly to your accountant during tax time.
